Thanks so much to James Ponti and Simon and Schuster for an eARC in exchange for an honest review!I have loved the intricate plots, witty banter, and intriguing characters that make up City Spies since the first book came out, and this newest addition, City of the Dead, did not fall short of this expectation。 It was incredible to hear the story from largely Kat's perspective, who now, I feel, I know so much better as a character。 Her love of logic and order, as well as dislike of chaos where the Thanks so much to James Ponti and Simon and Schuster for an eARC in exchange for an honest review!I have loved the intricate plots, witty banter, and intriguing characters that make up City Spies since the first book came out, and this newest addition, City of the Dead, did not fall short of this expectation。 It was incredible to hear the story from largely Kat's perspective, who now, I feel, I know so much better as a character。 Her love of logic and order, as well as dislike of chaos where there are no patterns, was entirely relatable。 Her relationship with Mother, our favorite father-figure master of spying, was so sweet as well。Can we also take a moment to appreciate all of the espionage terms and lingo that Ponti sprinkles throughout the novel? It adds a fantastic touch and wonderfully convincing authenticity to the series。I was also incredibly gratified to see the acknowledgement of many of the issues on taking artifacts by the British Museum - it presents the information respectfully and a way that younger readers can understand。 It provides much-needed awareness to many powerful aspects of Egyptian culture, but more than that, a sense of culture that is hard to find in other series。 It's obvious that Ponti has done genuine research to make this book thrive。 。。。more
Kathie,
Thank you to the publisher for an ARC of CITY OF THE DEAD。City Spies is one of those series I frequently recommend when readers are looking for action and adventure stories。 I often lose interest in a series by the fourth book, but CITY OF THE DEAD is partly set in Egypt with a mystery surrounding artifacts linked to the British Museum。 I was so engrossed in this story and its fast-paced action that I hardly noticed the length (which, if you know me and my dislike for longer middle-grade books, Thank you to the publisher for an ARC of CITY OF THE DEAD。City Spies is one of those series I frequently recommend when readers are looking for action and adventure stories。 I often lose interest in a series by the fourth book, but CITY OF THE DEAD is partly set in Egypt with a mystery surrounding artifacts linked to the British Museum。 I was so engrossed in this story and its fast-paced action that I hardly noticed the length (which, if you know me and my dislike for longer middle-grade books, says a lot about the series’ engaging writing。) There are so many details about the setting and technology that I felt like I escaped into the story, followed the team around, and was almost a spy myself! I spent a lot of time wondering about a new team member and where that storyline is going, so I look forward to reading the next installment。 I look forward to getting this book into the hands of young readers who are hooked on the series。 。。。more

eARC Provided by EdelweissThis has to be the best City Spies novel yet! I was a big fan of this series from the start and this book just made my opinion of the series much better。 I loved the detail and effort put into making the book very descriptive。 The idea of cyberattacks and stolen artifacts really intrigued me and made me want to find out what happens next。 This book contains a big change regarding Mother's family that could dramatically change the series。 I would recommend this to anyone eARC Provided by EdelweissThis has to be the best City Spies novel yet! Jaime,
This was such a fun middle grade read! City Of The Dead is book 4 is the City Spies series and I was able to jump right in without reading the previous books in the series。 I loved the characters and the mystery and adventure of this one。 Overall this was a great read that I think many middle-graders will love 😊
Ms。 Yingling,
E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusThe fascinating, unexplored storyline in City Spies, Golden Gate, and Forbidden City that has most intrigued me was Mother's abandonment in a burning building by his wife and fellow spy, Clementine。 He was rescued by the first City Spy, Paris, but Clementine has been on the run with their two children, and the suspicion is that she is working for Umbra, which is evil。 We've heard snippets of the story, but are usually too caught up in the current mission to learn E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusThe fascinating, unexplored storyline in City Spies, Golden Gate, and Forbidden City that has most intrigued me was Mother's abandonment in a burning building by his wife and fellow spy, Clementine。 He was rescued by the first City Spy, Paris, but Clementine has been on the run with their two children, and the suspicion is that she is working for Umbra, which is evil。 We've heard snippets of the story, but are usually too caught up in the current mission to learn more。 This time, Mother's past seems bound up with the current problem。 The children are sent to "retrieve" items from the British Museum, which seems a bit odd。 After some underground adventures and some explosives, they find out that there is more to this mission than they first believed。 Kat, in particular, starts to see some patterns emerge in seemingly random outages of the subway system and other London locations。 A coded scavenger hunt of sorts sends our intrepid young spies on a number of different sorties to find information, and they eventually end up in Egypt, in the Valley of the Kings! I find that I don't want to say too much about why they do there, or what they do, because everything unfolds in such a fun way, and I don't want to ruin anything。 Strengths: Even though there is a rather large cast, I am able to keep the characters separated in my mind, which speaks to the quality of the character development。 We learn a lot more about Kat and her abilities in this volume。 The biggest draw for me is always the travel, and I recommend these to students who want vicarious adventures when stuck in study hall! Including information about the King Tut exhibit is fantastic, sixth our sixth graders study ancient Egypt, and makes this a great companion to Fleming's The Curse of the Mummy! The issue of countries having appropriated cultural artifacts in the past and thinking now about returning them is addressed in a thoughtful way。 Of course, I was enthralled to find out more about Clementine and see a surprisingly character emerge and be added to the City Spies! This really made me think about Gilman's Mrs。 Pollifax novels, which I adored!Weaknesses: Like many traveling spy books, there are some coincidences and helpful people that seem a bit unlikely。 But then, we are dealing with tween spies who are traveling around the world, so an undercover taxi driver shouldn't really bother me! What I really think: While I'm a big fan of hugely long mystery series, five books is really about perfect for a middle grade series。 In my last deep weeding dive, I pulled some series where book ten had been checked out once in ten years。 Just before winter break, a student checked out a third book in a series that hadn't been circulated in the three years I've had it。 Certainly, this must be replicated in sales, which is what motivates publishers。 I love Ponti's work, but it's easier to circulate (and sell, I suspect) books that are stand alones or in shorter series。 If I'm wearing my Reader Hat, I say publish 20 more of these, but if I have on my Librarian Hat, I'd like to see the series wrapped up。 。。。more
Donna,
DRC from Edelweiss and Simon and SchusterAnother good one in the series。 We have our usual cast of characters - this time they are in Egypt。 Kat is in charge as the story opens and we see her strengths throughout the book。 Patterns and codes galore。 Clementine makes an appearance as does Mother's son。 Theme of artifacts and returning them to the country they came from is woven into the story。 DRC from Edelweiss and Simon and SchusterAnother good one in the series。 We have our usual cast of characters - this time they are in Egypt。 Kat is in charge as the story opens and we see her strengths throughout the book。 Patterns and codes galore。 Clementine makes an appearance as does Mother's son。 Theme of artifacts and returning them to the country they came from is woven into the story。 。。。more

The City Spies are chasing hackers who attack the British Museum and other English entities。 Chasing the hackers leads them to Egypt in search of renegade antiquities。 What I liked:Lots of great information about codes and returning cultural treasures to the countries from which they were stolen, and who owns the artifacts, who found them, the world, or the land they are from? I liked how, in each book, a particular character gets to show how they shine and why they have been selected for the team; this time, it is kat and her code-hacking abilities and how, amidst the chaos, she can see order。 There are a lot of layers, and this book makes for one of the most complexes the team has faced。 Final Verdict:On top of the central theme of these books is the added layer of the family, especially for "Mother," who has adopted the city spies but dearly misses his children, who his wife Clemmie has hidden from him。 Before the end of this novel, though, a significant change will happen for the city spies' family, and a new dynamic will be on the horizon。 How will this change the series for future books, and will "Mother" be able to reunite with his whole family? Again, this author does a fantastic job of placing a story that keeps you guessing as you read each page, writes characters that are great to root for, and keeps you guessing till the end how the whole mystery will play out。 。。。more

Another solid entry into the City Spies series。 When hackers attack the British Museum and various other English entities, the kids are called back into action。 Chasing the hackers leads to surprising discoveries and a quick trip to Egypt in search of renegade antiquities dealers。 A lot of great information here about codes and returning cultural treasures to the countries from which they were stolen。 Highly recommended for grades 5 & up。 The series is much better if read in order。eARC provided Another solid entry into the City Spies series。 When hackers attack the British Museum and various other English entities, the kids are called back into action。 Chasing the hackers leads to surprising discoveries and a quick trip to Egypt in search of renegade antiquities dealers。 A lot of great information here about codes and returning cultural treasures to the countries from which they were stolen。 Highly recommended for grades 5 & up。 The series is much better if read in order。eARC provided by publisher via Edelweiss 。。。more

Another City Spies book, you say? Sign me up! This time the kids are on the hunt for some hackers who are targeting London locations, but their trail leads to Egypt。 And along the way, they pick up a new team member! These books are just fantastic and I can't recommend them enough。My only complaint is that despite the title of this one being City of the Dead, very little time is actually spent there and it's not even a big plot point。 Still, loved this one。 Another City Spies book, you say?
